A few months after music teacher Jason Squinobal began teaching at South, Principal Joel Stembridge asked him to put together a pep band that would perform at the school’s football and basketball games.
After a month of organizing, 13 students joined the band. Now, it consists of students from every grade, the majority being sophomores. To recruit these students, Squinobal used an open-enrollment process, meaning that any student that wanted to join could. “It’s very simple music so even beginner musicians can join, he said.
There were two practice sessions before the first performance, in which the students learned traditional music that has been around since the school’s original pep band. After a 20-year hiatus, the new pep band hit the ground running by performing at South’s football game against Acton Boxborough Regional High School.
“They livened up the stands and it was another form of entertainment for the spectators, senior Jess Zellner-Kline said.
Squinobal hopes that this can become a lasting tradition for the pep band as the years progress. “[The pep band] would like a steady growth of enrollment and that it can remain big and strong, he said.
The band will perform at all the home football and basketball games and the pep rallies.
