Girls’ Gymnastics most improved from last year

“After [we beat] Acton-Boxsborough it was a pretty big deal because we felt overwhelming victory and our confidence definitely went up like while were unsure before now we were becoming much more sure of things said Anastasia Lymar.

The Girls’ Gymnastics team had a phenomenal run this past year, ending up undefeated in the Dual County League (DCL) regular season with a 8-0 record and a DCL title. The 2009-2010 campaign marked the first undefeated regular season in the program’s history.

The team greatly improved from last year’s record, thanks to the addition of new talented freshman including Kyra Visnick.

Although the team did not qualify for sectionals, two members, freshman Kyra Visnick and senior Sarah Berman, did make it to States.

These two gymnasts, along with senior and co-captain Cora Visnick, were the team’s top scorers in a season that leaves many with high hopes.

The Lions squad hopes that it can sustain its top-notch performance regardless of graduating six seniors this spring.

In some ways, this sixteen-member team’s performance was a Cinderella story that unfolded throughout the course of its 11-week season.

For some gymnasts, an undefeated season was unexpected.

“We were looking forward to a fun season, but as each meet passed, we saw more and more room for improvement, the older Visnick said.

“The amount of work we got done was phenomenal. Our progress was the most I’ve seen in my four years, and it was fun to watch us accomplish goal after goal until we won the DCL title.

“It felt very good [to be part of the dramatic improvement] because we never expected to win, Lymar said. “In the past, we have never been able to beat some of the stronger teams in the league.

A combination of youth and experience reaped the unprecedented success. The tandem of the Visnick sisters produced points in meets and cohesion outside the gym.

Kyra is especially valuable to the Girls’ Gymnastics team because she has another three years to develop into a dominant gymnast in the DCL. Her contributions this season proved that her potential talent will be an invaluable asset for the upcoming years.

“[Kyra] will do big things for high school gymnastics, her sister said.

Along with the Visnicks, contributions from Berman and classmate Kate Margulis, along with sophomores Annie Humpfrey and Ana Purna Ravel, contributed dedication and consistency to their team.

Junior Anastasia Lymar, the sole captain for next year, hopes an emphasis on team cohesion and hard work will equate to another successful year.

As for next year, although the team is losing a handful of talented seniors, plenty of talent is returning, and there are some eagerly-anticipated new members that are also joining the roster.

While assessing the outlook for next season may be premature, Cora asserts that the 2010-2011 season will be just as successful.

“Sometimes I wish I could stay one more year to see what’s to come, she said “They’re going to be excellent next year.

If this holds true, the Girls’ Gymnastics program will earn the right to be considered not as a Cinderella, but as a perennial contender.
