Home game. For many South athletes, these two words represent something unfamiliar and new. Some South teams have never played a home game or felt that rush of adrenaline when the home team fans begin to cheer.

Well, we're all back to school. I hope you all had a wonderful summer, because I did. My summer, however, was a little bit different than most. In addition to the usual sitting around that I, I traveled quite a bit, and most importantly I traveled to the place that I talk about most: Palestine.

Get-Up Tour combats teenage smoking

The XBox 360 Get-Up Tour, in support of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, made the first stop of its 10-week, 50-school tour at South on September 14. BMX bikers, skateboarders, and inline skaters assembled in South's faculty parking lot on a mobile half-pipe. As an announcer presented facts about the risks of smoking, the extreme athletes entertained students with high-flying, daredevil tricks.

Principal plans new decision system

In hopes of standardizing the decision-making process and creating a system to collect opinions from students, teachers, and parents, Principal Joel Stembridge plans to redefine how policies are created at South.

Fitness Room closed during day due to budget constraints

Upon returning to South, many students discovered that the fitness room is no longer available for student use during normal school hours. According to Wellness teacher Alan Rotatori, the room closed due to recent budget cuts.
Newton South students have always been widely recognized for their achievements in the arts; this year they are well on their way to continuing the tradition. Seniors Taichi Fukumura and Tanny Kang, junior Daniel Zhang, and sophomore Elliot Seidman have been selected to participate in the National High School Honors Orchestra (NHSHO) out of hundreds who auditioned from across the Unite States and Canada for just 120 spots.
Throw a cast of no-name actors into a genre that's been recycled, regurgitated, and beaten to death, and then selling it to a country that primarily sees movies based on celebrity name recognition is no small task, but Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp have succeeded gloriously.

Community swayed by loss of Swayze

Triple threat, Patrick Swayze, an actor, dancer, and singer-songwriter, died on September 14 after fighting against cancer for almost two years. Some South students may know him from Dirty Dancing, others may know him from his recent battle with pancreatic cancer, and others may never have heard of him at all. Though he is not as well known as certain other actors, Swayze leaves behind a small legacy of his own within the South community.
As the value of the dollar continues to shrink, a new trend in clothing has become a fad. Thrift shopping is more and more common as the current state of the economy steadily recovers.

World leaders meet at United Nations to discuss global climate change

Negotiations for a global climate change treaty went underway when about 100 world leaders met at United Nations in New York on September 22.
