The policy reinforces a safety issue according to Principal Joel Stembridge.

“It’s a signal to parents and students and teachers that it’s not safe to be here just [in groups of] two’s or three’s when it’s dark, he said.

Stembridge believes that faculty is responsible for student safety in the absence of the students’ legal parents and guardians.

Wheeler Housemaster Josepha Blocker believes feels that parents can not assume their children are safe after school hours because they are in a school.“This building is a public building, Blocker said. “After hours, we don’t know who’s here.

Students waiting for the late bus can find supervision in “The Lion’s Spot, an area located in room 4103 that provides students with a variety of activities including trivia games, art supplies, and an XBox game console.

Freshman Elena Byun believes that students should be allowed in the building after school even if they may not have supervision. She found practicing with a few friends in the band room in preparation of auditions very helpful.

“Responsibility is something that we are capable of, Byun said.
