Lacrosse captains Joey Ives, AJ Koger, Dan Marks, and Tim Donovan know how to control a team.

As second-year captains, Marks and Ives are already used to taking the reins. Along with Koger and Donovan, they hope that they can guide the team through a successful season.

With these captains at the helm, the boy’s Lacrosse Team should be able to channel their talent and win some games this season.

“It should be a strong team this year, Ives said.

All of the captains have worked hard to improve their performance.

“I’ve gotten faster and stronger, and also improved my stick skills in the off-season, Marks said. “In the off-season I lifted three times a week and tried to play catch or shoot around whenever I could.

In addition to lifting, the captains also focused on the mental aspects of lacrosse. “I think I’m a smarter lacrosse player than last year and know a lot more about the game, Donovan said.

The other players follow the example set by the captains set by working hard during the off-season and in practice.

“We had a lot of guys playing lacrosse and getting in shape in the off-season, Ives said. “The team lifts or runs after every practice.

The captains also play a major role in getting the team pumped up and ready for each game.

“To get the team fired up before a game, we bring the team into a huddle, Ives said. “In this huddle we give one final pre-game effort to get everyone’s mind and heart into the game.

Along with reviewing their game plan and other preparatory matters, the huddle includes motivational talks.
“Sometimes we yell in the huddle and try to get focused and fired up, Marks said. “Mostly we just try to get everyone on the same page and ready to play hard.

In addition to the huddle, some captains have special pregame routines. Marks and Ives listen to music, while Ives usually eats chocolate. Donovan takes a more conventional approach with a pregame nap.

The captains may relax before the game, but once it is time to take the field there is no one more focused than these four. They constantly think about the game and talk to their teammates to make sure that everyone knows what they are doing.

These leaders are not complacent just because they have captain status.

Marks is working on being a forceful presence in the locker room. “I don’t do that much to get the team fired up, he said. “I just try to stress some important things that will help us win and just try to get everyone into the game.
Since it is his second year as a captain, Ives understands the high expectations of a varsity athlete at South.
“I think my biggest strength is that I listen to other players on the team, he said. “I respect every player’s opinion, and I think that makes me pretty approachable.

Donovan hopes his dedication and commitment for the Lacrosse Team carries over to the other players.
“As a captain, I can really show how much I care about the team and all my teammates, Donovan said.
With this great display of leadership and commitment, the team will be tough to beat. They will be a formidable force in the Dual County League this season.
