South’s Science Team placed fourth out of 36 teams at the Massachusetts Science Olympiad at Framingham State College on March 21.

The Science Team lost to Acton-Boxboro, Lexington, and Newton North, which placed first at the meet. Since the team did not place first they will not move on to the National Competition in Augusta, Georgia.
Each team consisted of 15 students, and each student took part in two to four events. The events were either written tests on specific subjects, building challenges assigned before the meet, or laboratory experiment activities. The events covered all disciplines of science including chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, herpetology, and evolution.

“We competed in regional tournaments and did well, Science team coach Jordan Kraus said. “Often regional tournaments are previews of states.

Science Team captain senior Nicole Repina was unsurprised by the team’s placement at the meet.
“[The team] has done around the same for the past years, she said. “Last year we got fifth and the year before, third.

Although the Science Team is not moving on to Nationals, they plan to participate in the upcoming Boston University School of Engineering competition.
