Newton seeks new South principal

In light of Principal Brian Salzer’s resignation, the Newton Public Schools has begun its search for a new principal.

The Principal Selection Advisory Committee (SAC), a 17-member group consisting of parents, teachers, and student representatives, will assist Superintendent Jeffrey Young in appointing a new principal.

Members will review applicant resumes, interview semi-finalists, and send the finalist applicants for Young to interview. The SAC will represent both the school and community’s interest while reviewing applicants.

According to Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Paul Stein, if Young rejects the finalists endorsed by the SAC, then an interim principal will be appointed. If not, then Young plans to announce the new principal on April 6.

A principal in Wisconsin for six years prior to his time at South, Salzer credits his relatively smooth transition to South’s welcoming community.

“The teachers have a passion for teaching. The students have a passion for learning, Salzer said. “And we are passionate about working with kids.

Salzer has applied for several superintendent positions in other school districts. He appreciates South’s support of him leaving and apologizes for his abrupt departure.

Salzer’s resignation will mark the fourth principal in six years.

History teacher Brian Murray has worked at schools that have had the same principal for over 20 years, and hopes that, in the future, South might have the same opportunity.

“If someone is able really to shape the climate at school, it is the principal, Murray said. “When you do not have a long term school head, then the culture can be damaged by that.

With a new principal, faculty members are concerned about the school’s budget situation.

“I am concerned about South being hurt in the budgeting process by not having an advocate that has been here for a while, Parlin said.

Others, like Jampol, see the budget crisis as a problem the school will overcome with time.

If Young appoints a new principal by April 6, Salzer will aide the new principal in his or her transition. He will continue working the same way he has until his contract expires on June 30.

“We will just have to work with the new principal, Jampol said. “I’ll do my part. I got to know [Salzer], and I’m glad I did.
