Salzer earns approval

Two weeks ago, Principal Brian Salzer emailed the South community announcing that he has applied for superintendent and assistant superintendent positions in other school districts. In response to this announcement, many have expressed a variety of thoughts and feelings regarding Salzer’s potential departure at the end of this school year.

Superintendent Jeff Young expressed approval in the Newton TAB, saying that “[Salzer's] done some good things here in Newton.

Young’s supportive comments only begin to suggest how important Salzer has been over the past two and a half years. His accomplishments, both large and small, are numerous, and his direct positive impact on students, teachers, and parents has been tremendous.

This impact can be attributed to the obvious ways his caring has been expressed. Salzer consistently makes an effort to connect with individuals and groups from all parts of the community, and this is clear not only from his consistent attendance at theatre, music, athletic, and other extracurricular events, but also from the support and approval he receives in return from such a wide variety of people.

While students praise him for his ability to understand and work with teenagers, teachers recognize his pedagogical insight and willingness to help whenever needed, including encouraging everything from adequate technology to organizing our global exchanges. Parents, who are not at South throughout the day, appreciate his thoughtful communication, whether in the form of weekly emails, at school events, or individually. And the rest of the Newton community – with which Salzer has had a unique relationship because of media attention – generally agrees that South benefits from his good judgment around events ranging from controversial speakers to issues of safety and security.

Denebola adds its approval of Salzer’s leadership of Newton South, and believes that the Newton community is truly lucky to have him in a position in which he has such a positive impact on Newton’s youth. We also understand and respect, however, that he is investigating his options to increase his leadership role in other school districts. We support him in his endeavors, and believe any school district would be very fortunate to have him as its leader.
