Boys’ basketball team begins season led by ten seniors

The boys’ basketball team, led by senior co-captains Tavone Wynder and Tyrik Wilson, hopes to improve upon last season’s 11-10 record.

The Lions lost to Taunton in the first round of the state tournament last year, and would like to reach the South sectional finals this season, according to Wynder.

Wynder and Wilson are joined by eight other seniors including Keilan Jackson, Willie Lyons, Chi Chi Foster, and Dan Marks.

Lyons will miss the first five games of the season, and Foster is currently injured and his return is questionable. Foster suffered a dislocated shoulder during tryouts. Marks sprained his ankle during tryouts as well, but played in the first game of the season.

Juniors Alex O’Hagan, Willie Allen, and Ethan Landzberg will also help the team, especially in light of the absence of stars Lyons and Foster.

The Lions suffered a tough loss to Wayland last Friday 83-71. Because of a broken scoreboard in the field house, the boys’ basketball game took place in Gym B. Though temperatures reached close to boiling points at times, the smaller venue contributed to a more intimate atmosphere. South turned the ball over too many times, allowing Wayland’s three guards to have a combined total of over 60 points. Wayland’s star player, Charlie Brown, led their offensive attack.

“It was quite devastating. I had high expectations, I forgot Willie and Chi Chi were out, senior and devoted fan Laura Crowe said. “Their absence was definitely felt. It’s always nice to see Tavone and Willie though. It was their first game, so now they know what they have to work on.

The team is full of talented players who have strong offensive skills. Under head coach Joe Killilea, and assistant coach, Jeff Kellem, South hopes to improve their defense. There is no doubt these two coaches have experience. Killilea is in his thirty first year as head coach and Kellem is in his fifteenth year as assistant coach.

“He [Killilea] has seen and been in so many high school basketball games, senior Ben Allar said.

The Lions’ experienced coaching staff and large group of seniors should help to create good communication between players and coaches, helping the team have a successful season.

“We are trying to make a statement because we feel we can be one of the top 20 teams in the state this year. The offense is there, but we just need to work hard on defense, Wynder said.

“A lot of kids have come up to me and asked, ‘ËœWhat can I do to make me an impact player,’ Wilson said.

Playing in a summer league against other Dual County League opponents, and holding captain’s practices twice a week during the fall, Wynder and Wilson have helped to build a close team connection, one that they hope will translate to several victories on the court.

“We are a very athletic team, and we rely on our athleticism to make plays, Allar said.

The Lions’ toughest competition in the DCL will come from Westford Academy and Boston-Latin, but out of league opponents such as Newton North and Catholic Memorial will also provide strong competition.

The Lions hope to continue their road to a winning season when they travel to Waltham on Friday.

“This year is really our year to shine, Allar said
