One might think that the small population of Sweden would care very little about the United States presidential election. This, however, is not the case. Swedes, in general, have shown a great interest in the upcoming national election.

Everywhere you go traveling through Sweden you hear people discussing the presidential candidates and the possible outcomes. Newspapers have specific sections dedicated to the popularized US election, providing insight to the election process.

Many newspaper editorials provide up-to-date commentaries featuring different angles and perspectives. Swedish television channels send foreign correspondents to the United States in order to cover the election and to report on the latest developments, including the polls.

Also, all of the major debates are broadcasted live via Swedish television networks, which are viewed by a staggering number of people, despite the fact that they are shown in the middle of the night, Swedish local time.

Swedes are also very opinionated on who they support. A general conception is that Obama is the better candidate.

According to a poll conducted by one of Sweden’s largest newspapers, Aftonbladet, 87.2 percent of Swedish people answered that they hope Obama wins the U.S. election.

Many are disappointed with current US foreign policy and, due to the war in Iraq, seem to have lost respect for the country as a whole.

The majority of Swedes would like to see a change and believe that Obama is the best candidate for that. Whatever the outcome of the election, the Swedish population will continue to follow the political developments in the US with great interest.
