Replacing the soon to be retired Kathryn Daviau and Dr. Edward Jackson, Josepha Blocker and Henry Turner will take up the roles as South housemasters at the start of next year.
Blocker will replace Daviau as Wheeler Housemaster. She is currently the Dean of Students at the nearby Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Previously, Blocker worked at Newton North as an assistant housemaster and as a computer science and math teacher.
While at North, Blocker was a part of the NEASC Committee and worked as the advisor for the Class of 2006. Blocker holds degrees from Tufts University and Simmons College.
“She’s just the most awesome person ever¦I’m so jealous that you’re going to have her over there¦You people are going to love her, Newton North Math Department Head Cynthia Bergan said.
Henry Turner will succeed Jackson as Goldrick Housemaster. Turner is currently a history teacher at Lexington High School, where he teaches junior and senior history classes including AP U.S. History.
In addition to teaching history, Turner has written Political Thought and African-American History curriculums. He is a class advisor at Lexington, but is also very involved in athletics, coaching JV girls soccer as well as swimming.
Turner received degrees from University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Framingham State College. Turner also has an administrative licensure from the Educators Leadership Institute.
Turner is looking forward to working as Housemaster.
“I am very excited about coming to South. The people that I have met so far at South have been very friendly and I am looking forward to meeting students and teachers, he said.
According to Salzer, the two candidates were chosen out of several hundred applicants. Administrators narrowed the candidates down to ten, and then a committee consisting of Principal Salzer, Science Department head Charles Hurwitz, Math Department head Steven Rattendi and several other administrators chose the final two.
