Looking into the future of Newton Public schools, Superintendent Jeffrey Young announced a process to create a vision for the Newton education system in the year 2020.

The Strategic Planning Team (SPT), a 20-member committee, proposed a 12-year plan to prepare today’s kindergarten class for the modern world.

“This year’s kindergarteners will be the graduates of 2020. What will the world be like? Young said. “All we can do is prepare them.

Young centered his plans on “identifying [Newton's] strengths and building on them in the future. He wants our schools to evolve from “very good schools to ones that are really great in 2020.

Young stressed that this ongoing change must be a community effort. “It’s not just what I think that matters¦not just the faculty, not just the students¦but all of the above, he said.

The SPT surveyed 800 parents and over 400 staff members, asking about the strengths and weaknesses of the current Newton education system. The SPT aimed to obtain ideas from all the people of Newton.

An important goal for the SPT is to bring the current Newton educational system into Global Age of the future via global education. “The world is smaller. The world is flatter. The world is different, Young said, referencing Thomas Friedman’s book The World is Flat, which SPT members are required to read.

The importance of the school’s workforce was a top priority of the SPT. The NPS wanted to maintain and attract the best teachers for Newton schools.

Young was intrigued by the statistic that 75 percent of job seekers entering the teaching career come from the bottom 20 percent of their graduating class. He noted that Newton did not follow the statistics and would continue to retain and strong workforce.

According to Young, the last main concern for the plans of 2020 is “making the boundaries between schools and the world more permeable.

“Do we really want to restrict our students’ learning in 900 square foot classrooms? Young said.
All of these plans are susceptible to change. The SPT plans to break up the 12-year course into smaller more flexible five-year increments. In order to overcome unknown future obstacles, “this plan will respond to the environment, Young said.

The new school system in 2020 will have unpredictable new characteristics, technology, and programs. “Ideas should always evolve and adapt to the committee, Young said.
