Where the Sidewalk Ends

Posted By Annie Orenstein On March 19, 2008 @ 7:48 pm In Book Review | Comments Disabled

Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends is a collection of poetry that many children have come to adore. Silverstein addresses common childhood concerns like monsters under the bed while portraying a fantasy world full of dreams and, of course, unicorns.

While aimed at children ages four to ten, Where the Sidewalk Ends is an enjoyable read for all ages. Whether it is learning the right way to fake being sick in order to avoid school, or obtaining that forbidden cookie after dinner, this laugh-out-loud, rhyming poetry is sure to grab your attention.

Silverstein’s imagination does not cease to amaze us with his purely fanciful stories of shoes that fly, crocodiles going to the dentist, and girls who eat whales. His talent is not only evident through his writing, but also through the original illustrations that accompany the poems; they portray perfect, true-to-the-words representations of each poem.

This collection of humorous poems is what introduces many young children to the world of poetry. And while it serves solely as a introduction to them, even teenagers and adults can sometimes immerse themselves in the fantasy world that is the work of Shel Silverstein.
