Selected Poems of Emily Dickenson

Every year for my birthday, my grandfather sends me a book of poetry by Emily Dickinson. As you can imagine, it is alittle tough to muster enough enthusiasm for that “thank you so much, just what I’ve always wanted, when faced with 200 pages of 19th century literature – especially when you are nine years old and what you actually want is an Easy-Bake Oven.

Recently, however, my English class has been studying a unit on poems, and I am actually enjoying a few of the pieces we are studying. After reading and discussing poetry in class, I dug out one of my grandfather’s gifts from the stash under my bed, opened it up, and began to read.

At first, Emily Dickinson: Selected Poems is a text that can be slightly confusing because of the lack of titles and seemingly random dashes. Once you get past this, however, Dickinson’s words become personally meaningful, making it worth reading.

Although I have never been a big fan of poetry, I have come to enjoy Dickinson’s work. No longer does it take an English class interpretation – no matter how fun those are – to enjoy a piece of poetry. Sometimes, it is even better to just listen to and enjoy the sounds of the words.

No matter how short or long the poem is, you can find something about it that you enjoy: the sounds of the words, the story it tells, or even a hidden, deeper meaning.
