By Mark GarrityIt has been a great season all around for the golf team. The team finished the season with an 11-7 record, an improvement from last year’s 8-7-1 effort.

Some of this success has been because of senior captains, Josh Belowich and Chris Chung. Both golfers have been on varsity since their freshman year. Mike Fleming, the team’s coach, has been influential in both of these player’s games. Both have high praise for Fleming. “He is a great coach who helped us out a lot and was fun to work with,” Belowich said.

Belowich, who finished in the top two in total points for the team, has had a great tenure on the golf team. He attended practice at the Newton Commonwealth and Ponkapoag Golf Courses with the rest of the team where they worked a lot on their short games.

Belowich, because of his success during the season, qualified for the DCL-League All Star match and finished in a tie for fifth along with sophomore Jesse Zorfas as they both shot 79.

Belowich said that of all his memories playing golf, the highlight was when he played on his first US Open golf course that he worked at over the summer.

Chung, who also worked at the US Open golf course, had a great season for the Newton South golf team, finishing fourth on the team in points.

Unfortunately, South was only able to take the top three golfers to the DCL-League all star match. Chung thought that the season was decent overall.

His game was in a slump for parts of the season, but he had some good rounds against both Boston Latin and Weston.

Chung’s experience of being captain was “A lot more responsibility than I anticipated.”

Both captains think that there are young prospects coming up that will lead the team in the future: athletes Ray Heinrichs, Jesse Zorfas, Bobby Maruli, Chad Stumpo, and Jake Wylheimer have all displayed exemplary skill this season.

Belowich plans to play college golf next year and Chung hopes to major in pro golf management in college.
