Halloweek boosts South’s spirit

By Elissa SpinnerHalloweek is kicking off today, and the South community has already begun its week of festivities meant to boost school spirit. The week will begin with a dress-up day for students that will be sure to show us the many sides of South students.
The next day, Friday, will be a school pride day, in which students dress in orange and blue and a pep rally will be held in the Field House. The following days will consist of a Boston sports day and a Mix Up day when boys will dress like girls and vice versa. On Halloween, students will be able to wear their costumes throughout the school day.
Not only is Halloweek a great demonstration of spirit, but it is also a great cause. Throughout the week, there will be a canned food drive to support a local shelter, and the homeroom which collects the most cans wins a breakfast party.
Although Halloweek intends to boost school, some South students have not been greatly affected by past Halloweeks. Sophomore Vanessa Gailius did not even “realize anything [Halloweek] was going on.
Many students feel that South lacks spirit largely due to the students’ demanding schedules. “We all have so much stuff in our lives that we don’t have time to think about school spirit, sophomore Sarah Robins said.
While most South students are focused mostly on their own schedules, some students wish there was more spirit at South. “I think it would be a good idea to have events that show more school spirit but everybody’s wrapped up in their own thing, senior Julia Frieze said.
“I like the idea of Halloweek, but it just never works out as we’d all like it to, senior Tracy Federschneider said.
Some students are not optimistic that Halloweek is the answer to improve spirit.
“South is such a big school that it’s hard to do Halloweek unless everyone’s willing to do it, said Frieze.
Some South students, however, are excited for Halloweek.
“They should keep Halloweek because we get to get out of class! sophomore Benjy Alauf said.
Cheerleaders are especially excited for Halloweek because they get to perform a new routine at the pep rally. “Our routine will blow you away, cheerleader Terese Brooks said.
Though some students are still skeptical of the success of Halloweek, this year’s improved schedule is sure to make the week leading up to Halloween the most lively yet.
