Please Britney, Gimme Less!

With school starting again and the weather changing, it truly is the season, the season for another half-hearted Britney Spears attempt at a comeback, that is. It has been almost a month since Spears last messed up. Thank goodness for the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The VMAs, which took place on Sunday, September 9, featured Spears as the opening musical performance. The performance was meant to be a kickoff to the new and (hopefully) improved awards show, and a promotion for her new single, “Gimme More.”

Not surprisingly, “Gimme More” is a digital mess of synthesized pop vocals and dull beats.

What is surprising, however, is the fact that Spears actually forced viewers to witness her, a post-natal, post-rehab, trashy mess, careen gracelessly across stage in nothing but what must have been merely leftovers of a dominatrix Halloween outfit.

Spears has never been too fond of wearing any sort of respectable clothing onstage, but in the past at least she gave her performances an honest effort. She worked hard to maintain the flat and toned stomach, perfect hair, and good-girl image the record company, and indirectly, the public, demanded of her.

After “Gimme More,” however, any dignity that Spears had once possessed disappeared as quickly as Kevin Federline’s solo career.

As she lip-synched (off beat, mind you), she stumbled through basic choreography that made her appear even more outlandish and tasteless than ever before.

Naturally, a “comeback” such as this one was due for a while. It’s no secret that in the past three years, Spears has gotten married, had two children, gotten divorced, been to rehab, shaved her head, and flashed paparazzi multiple times. Therefore, it seems understandable that Britney was so tired and underenthusiastic on the day of her performance. You would be too, if you were running around getting all those things accomplished.

Other celebrities who attended the VMAs were also under-whelmed by her less than quality act.

They too recognized and were annoyed at the low-grade entertainment that occupied the opening slot of the VMAs.

Rapper Kanye West was less critical of Spears’ actual performance itself than the fact that MTV would actually fill up that coveted opening spot with Spears over someone else better suited for it.

It should be noted, however, that the example West offered of that “someone else better suited” was, incidentally, himself.

Comedian Sarah Silverman followed Spears’ act with an act of her own that was less intended for humor, and more intended to point out the exact ways that Spears’ career as a whole is terrible, saying: “She is amazing. I mean, she is 25 years old and she’s already accomplished everything she’s going to accomplish in her life.”

Likewise, Senior Emma O’Leary is not at all amazed by Spears’ performance, or the negative attention it generated. “It really was a sub-par performance, but nobody should have expected it to be any better than it was. Given her recent history, a serious, actual comeback was just not probable at this point in her career.”

Spears herself did not appear to be too phased by her own failed performance or the negative attention it generated withh the public.

Of course, she is probably busy trying to convince a judge that she is a legitemate mother and should have primary custody of her two children, despite her erratic and improper behavior, to even notice it.
