Sadly, this past summer I did not read anything I truly loved, but I did read David Copperfield , and it was the best book of the lot. (I know, I know–sooo English teacher of me.) I had never read the story before, and I figured that Dickens writes plot well enough to keep me going even with a new baby in the house.

On the whole, he met expectations. Though the novel lacks any great mystery, I found that I didn’t care. I liked David enough that I wanted to spend time with him, and any scene that involved Aunt Betsy and Mr. Dick kept me entertained enough to offset that annoying little dog. I also liked that many of the characters were familiar “types” from other Dickens novels, and so I never had to work too hard to sort out the Trusted Companion from the Young Scoundrel.

Beyond that, the various relationships in the novel were entertaining and at times thought provoking, but there was nothing too heavy. In the end, I wasn’t in the mood for a heavy, psychological story, and so

Dickens was just about right.
